Suno and BMG announce global licensing partnership for AI music

AI music platform Suno has entered into a global licensing agreement with BMG, covering both recorded repertoire and music publishing. This partnership aims to develop a new AI music model trained on licensed data, marking a shift toward industry-sanctioned training methods. Under the terms, BMG artists and songwriters must opt in to have their music used for AI inputs and outputs, and those who participate will receive compensation. The deal also settles Suno’s past use of BMG’s recordings and publishing works.

This strategic move comes as Suno faces ongoing copyright infringement lawsuits from major entities including Universal Music Group and Sony Music. The agreement follows a similar deal previously reached with Warner Music Group.

Simultaneously, Suno has launched Suno Studio 2.0, a significant upgrade to its generative audio workstation. The update introduces professional-grade tools for Premier subscribers, including MIDI import and recording, a wavetable synthesizer, track automation, and a beta-phase conversational AI chat bar designed to assist with music production tasks. The new interface allows users to use MIDI clips as prompts for AI-generated audio, blending traditional digital audio workstation (DAW) capabilities with generative AI.
