Suno faces multiple lawsuits over copyright infringement

AI music generation company Suno is facing significant legal challenges from major music industry players regarding the unauthorized use of copyrighted material to train its models.

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The labels allege that Suno’s updated ‘v6’ models continue to infringe on copyrights, arguing that the use of their recordings for training does not fall under the fair use doctrine. While Warner Music Group previously settled and entered a licensing partnership with Suno, Sony and UMG are pursuing further legal action.

Additionally, music publisher Reservoir has filed lawsuits seeking over $285 million in damages from Suno and Anthropic. Reservoir’s claims against Suno involve the unauthorized use of 1,050 works, including the reproduction of hip-hop producer tags, which the publisher describes as an integral musical signature. The litigation also targets Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, alleging it can copy or create versions of lyrics that include protected elements of songs.
