Suno launches v6 AI music models using licensed Warner and BMG catalogs

AI music startup Suno has launched its v6 model family, marking a strategic shift toward licensed training data following intense copyright litigation. Unlike previous versions, the v6 models were developed in partnership with Warner Music Group, BMG, and the distributor Believe. This new framework includes a revenue-sharing model where rights holders receive compensation for the use of their music in training and generation.

The v6 suite consists of three tiers: the flagship v6 model, the experimental v6-wild for Pro and Premier subscribers, and the v6-mini version available to free users. The new models offer enhanced capabilities, such as the ability to use text, audio, images, or video as creative prompts, as well as features for remixing, sampling, and creating mashups.

While the partnership with Warner Music Group follows a legal settlement, Suno remains in ongoing litigation with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. These companies have accused the startup of unauthorized use of millions of copyrighted songs. Suno’s leadership describes the new model as a ‘blueprint’ for future cooperation between generative AI companies and the music industry.
