Sunshine Protection Act faces uncertain Senate future

The future of seasonal clock changes in the United States remains uncertain as the November 1 deadline for daylight saving time to end approaches. While the House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act in July to make daylight saving time permanent, the legislation faces an uncertain path in the Senate.

President Donald Trump has publicly advocated for the bill, calling the current biannual practice "foolish, inconvenient and, in some cases, very costly." He argued that permanent daylight saving time would provide benefits such as reduced traffic accidents, lower crime rates, and energy savings.

Despite political momentum, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has questioned whether there are sufficient votes to pass the measure. With the Senate in recess until September 14, lawmakers are facing a narrow window to act before the scheduled fall time change.
