Super El Niño and Arctic Sea‑Ice Decline May Trigger Harsh Winter in North America and Europe
Recent climate analyses show that Arctic sea‑ice cover in June has fallen to a record low for the month, well below the ten‑year average and even beneath the all‑time low set in 2012. At the same time, a powerful Super El Niño is developing in the tropical Pacific, with projected sea‑surface temperature anomalies that could exceed +2 °C above normal, making it one of the strongest episodes on record.
Scientists warn that the combination of unusually thin Arctic ice and a strong El Niño can weaken the Polar vortex, the atmospheric system that normally traps cold air over the Arctic. A weaker vortex may allow frigid air masses to spill southward, increasing the risk of unusually cold weather in the United States, Canada and parts of Europe during the winter of 2026‑2027. Researchers note that similar configurations in the past have been linked to severe cold spells across these regions.
