Super El Niño expected to influence winter weather and energy costs

The arrival of a Super El Niño is expected to influence winter weather patterns and energy costs across the United States. Meteorologists note that while El Niño typically brings increased precipitation to the Southwest, including Southern Utah, its impact on Northern Utah remains less predictable. In the Northern United States, warmer temperatures are often associated with the cycle, potentially resulting in less snow.

In Massachusetts, the weather phenomenon may lead to a warmer-than-average winter, which could potentially lower heating costs. However, energy experts warn that heating oil prices remain high, averaging $6.12 per gallon compared to $3.51 at this time last year. This increase is attributed to international conflicts affecting global oil supply and diminished refining capacity due to drone attacks in the Russia-Ukraine war, alongside necessary refinery and pipeline repairs.

Despite weather uncertainties, Utah ski resorts such as Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort are proceeding with seasonal preparations, including snowmaking efforts to build winter bases.
