Super El Niño intensification threatens European autumn and winter weather

The Super El Niño phenomenon is rapidly intensifying in the tropical Pacific, potentially reaching record levels. This climatic event, driven by a combination of strong westerly winds and significant heat accumulation beneath the ocean surface, is altering atmospheric circulation far beyond the Pacific region.

Long-term forecasts suggest the impacts could be felt in Europe during the autumn and winter seasons. From October to December, much of Europe may experience a low-pressure area with above-average temperatures. Additionally, westerly and southwesterly currents from the Atlantic could bring high levels of moisture, increasing the likelihood of above-average precipitation across much of the continent. These early seasonal forecasts remain subject to change as the autumn season approaches.
