The team’s campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) ended with a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon, marking the first time the ten-time champions failed to reach the semifinals.

Despite the setback, the Super Falcons face a decisive play-off match against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in Casablanca this Thursday. The winner of this encounter will advance to an intercontinental play-off tournament for a chance to secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Both teams are seeking redemption after failing to qualify automatically following their respective quarter-final exits.

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has indicated that the technical team is reviewing the squad, specifically considering changes in the goalkeeping position following Chiamaka Nnadozie’s errors during WAFCON. Meanwhile, star striker Asisat Oshoala has called for national support, emphasizing that the team must avoid the same fate as the men’s senior team, which also missed out on the 2026 World Cup.
