Super Typhoon Champi reaches Category 5 intensity in the Pacific

Super Typhoon Champi, also known locally in the Philippines as Rosal, has intensified into a Category 5-equivalent storm, becoming the strongest tropical cyclone recorded in 2026. The system has reached maximum sustained winds of approximately 185 mph (298 km/h) with a central pressure estimated as low as 895 hPa.

The typhoon has passed near Guam, causing damage to trees and roofs, and has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. In response, the Philippine meteorological agency, PAGASA, has issued alerts for several northern and eastern provinces, including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, and Catanduanes. High seas of up to 9 meters are expected in some areas.

Forecast models currently show disagreement regarding the storm's future track. Some projections suggest Champi may turn northeast toward Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Kyushu, while other models indicate a path that could bring the typhoon closer to Taiwan or lead to a landfall in Taiwan. Authorities in Zhejiang province, China, have already begun preparations for potential evacuations.
