Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan, prompting emergency

Overview

Typhoon Champi, a Category 5-equivalent storm identified by NASA as one of the strongest cyclones of 2026, continues to pose a significant threat to East Asia. The storm has recorded sustained winds near 296 km/h with gusts exceeding 227 km/h, maintaining a large wind radius of approximately 300 to 320 kilometers.

As the typhoon approaches Taiwan’s northeastern coast, the impact has intensified. The death toll stands at at least one, while injuries have risen to 163, with casualties concentrated in Taichung and Changhua. Approximately 2,639 residents have been evacuated from high-risk areas, including New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hualien, and Yilan. Authorities have ordered the suspension of work and classes across 19 counties and cities for Friday, October 23, and financial markets have been closed.

Recent meteorological updates indicate the storm is moving northward and is expected to move away from Taiwan’s landmass by the evening of October 24. While the eye is not expected to make direct landfall, its outer circulation continues to impact the region. In Kinmen, the local disaster response center has been activated at level three; although not in a direct storm surge warning zone, officials are preparing for wind gusts up to level 9.

Meteorological authorities have warned northern and central Taiwan to remain vigilant for heavy rain and strong winds. While rainfall is expected to decrease in the afternoon, moving primarily north of Miaoli, coastal areas may still experience significant wind speeds. Additionally, Hualien and Taitung regions are advised to prepare for potential Foehn winds, with temperatures potentially reaching 36 degrees Celsius or higher.
