Supergirl film underperforms at box office amid mixed reviews

The DC Universe’s second solo outing, Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, opened in the United States on June 26 2026. Preview screenings earned $7.8 million, but the film’s domestic opening weekend is projected at roughly $40 million, far below the studio’s expectations. Internationally the movie has added only $5.7 million across 78 territories, putting the worldwide debut in a $62‑$77 million range, well short of the $300 million target needed for profitability on a $170‑$186 million production budget.

Critical reception is mixed: Rotten Tomatoes reports a 57 % critic score, while audience polls give a B‑ CinemaScore and a 52 % PostTrak recommendation rating. Reviewers have highlighted a dark, morally complex finale and praised Alcock’s performance, but many criticize the film’s uneven tone, script issues, and lack of clear focus. Demographically the audience skewed heavily toward men over 25, with younger viewers (under 25) making up only about a third of ticket sales.

Despite the disappointing box office, Warner Bros. has secured over $100 million in media‑value partnerships, which may offset some financial shortfall. The film’s performance raises questions about the momentum of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe after the moderately successful Superman release the previous year.
