Supergirl film streams after $125 million loss
The 2026 DC film *Supergirl* opened on June 26, 2026 and earned only $37.1 million in its domestic opening weekend, far below forecasts. With a worldwide gross of about $124 million against a combined production and marketing budget of roughly $290 million, analysts estimate a loss of around $125 million.
The poor performance prompted Warner Bros. and DC to make the movie available for digital rental just 32 days after its theatrical debut, on platforms including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu and Fandango at Home. A physical 4K UHD, Blu‑ray and DVD edition is scheduled for release on September 8, 2026, while no HBO Max date has been announced.
The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor‑El and was directed by Craig Gillespie, with James Gunn serving as producer. Creative tensions between Gillespie and Gunn over final cuts were reported as part of the film’s troubled rollout.
