Supergirl (2026) opens to soft box office and mixed critical response

The DC Studios film *Supergirl*, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor‑El and directed by Craig Gillespie, premiered worldwide on 26 June 2026 after a Brooklyn debut on 22 June. With a reported production budget of about $170 million, the movie opened to modest earnings: U.S. preview screenings generated $7.8 million and the first‑day global total was $13 million. Box‑office trackers revised the opening‑weekend forecast to roughly $40–50 million, well below the studio’s expectations and lower than the $55 million opening of *The Flash*.

Critical reaction was similarly divided. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 59 % critic score and a 77 % audience rating, while Metacritic assigned a 50/100 mark. Reviewers praised Alcock’s performance but described the film as bland, derivative and uneven in tone. Some outlets noted the strong Brazilian influence on the soundtrack and artistic design, and highlighted the involvement of Brazilian artists in the comic source material.

International markets showed varied results. In Brazil the film benefitted from local cultural touches, while in India it opened with a day‑one gross of about ₹2 crore, deemed a decent start but facing stiff competition from domestic releases. Overall, *Supergirl* has been identified as one of DC’s weaker box‑office performers to date, though its international appeal and potential word‑of‑mouth could influence its eventual profitability.
