Supermarket food price comparisons reveal significant savings
Recent comparisons between specialized sports nutrition and everyday supermarket products highlight substantial price differences. For cyclists seeking carbohydrates, energy gels can be up to 20 times more expensive than common alternatives. For example, while a Decathlon energy gel costs approximately €1.87 per 30 grams of carbohydrates, similar amounts can be obtained from breakfast cake for €0.09, winegums for €0.17, or stroopwafels for €0.22.
In Spain, the consumer organization OCU reported that choosing the cheapest supermarket can save a household an average of €1,310 per year. The OCU study, which surveyed 690 stores across 38 cities, noted that the average grocery basket has become 2 percent more expensive this year and is nearly 40 percent higher than in 2021. Fresh products, particularly fish, saw the highest price increases at 8.5 percent. The report highlighted several regional Spanish chains that offer competitive pricing, such as Dani, Family Cash, Tifer, Cash Fresh, Deza, Gadis, Alimerka, and Consum.
