Strait of Hormuz: IRGC reports third supertanker hit by mine

Tensions have escalated in the Strait of Hormuz following a series of maritime incidents involving oil tankers. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that a supertanker, carrying approximately 750,000 barrels of crude oil, struck a naval mine, resulting in a massive explosion and fire in its engine room. This marks the third such incident involving a supertanker in the region since October 10.

The IRGC claimed the vessel was attempting to use an unauthorized route and had deactivated its navigation and positioning systems. Iranian authorities warned that any vessel disabling its transponders or identification systems within the strait will be treated as a hostile target.

Parallel to these incidents, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported multiple maritime strikes in the area. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to reopen the strait remain stalled. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that the United States' response to Tehran's seven conditions for reopening the waterway was insufficient, noting that while some conditions were met, others remain unclear. Iran maintains that maritime security will not return to the strait until the United States ends its naval blockade and economic warfare.
