Supertanker freight rates hit $80 million, exceeding SpaceX launch costs

Global supertanker freight rates have surged to historic highs, with the cost of chartering a vessel to transport crude oil from the United States to China reaching approximately $80 million. This figure exceeds the $74 million cost of a standard SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch.

According to shipping brokers including Gibson and Simpson Spence Young (SSY), inflation-adjusted tanker rates have surpassed levels seen during the Iran–Iraq Tanker War of the 1980s, marking the highest rates since the emergence of supertankers in the 1960s. On certain routes connecting the US Gulf and the Middle East to Asia, rates have increased by more than 300% since mid-August.

The spike is attributed to a shortage of available commercial tankers rather than a simple increase in crude demand. Disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz and military tensions involving Iran have forced shipping diversions and increased reliance on transshipment operations, which add significant time to voyages and tie up the global fleet. For some shipments, freight costs have reached $41 per barrel, compared to a $4.50 average last year, representing a substantial portion of the total delivered cost of oil.
