Supreme Court Allows Alabama Redistricting Map that Removes Majority-Black District

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6‑3 ruling permitting Alabama to use a newly drawn congressional map that eliminates one of the state’s two majority‑Black districts for the 2024 midterm elections. The decision reverses a three‑judge panel’s finding that the map was intentionally discriminatory under the Voting Rights Act, applying the higher proof standard set in the recent Louisiana v. Callais case.

Liberal justices authored a dissent warning that the ruling could create chaos by forcing rapid changes to voter registrations and undermining protections for Black voters. The map, originally blocked for diluting Black voting strength, had been the subject of a protracted legal battle since the 2020 census, and its adoption now gives Republicans a stronger foothold in Alabama’s congressional delegation.
