Supreme Court directs Tamil Nadu to approach CWMA over Cauvery water dispute

The Supreme Court of India has directed the Tamil Nadu government to raise its grievances regarding the release of Cauvery water with the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The directive follows a plea from Tamil Nadu claiming it has not received its proportionate share of water from Karnataka.

During the hearing, a bench consisting of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta noted that Karnataka had previously provided data indicating compliance with CWMA directions. However, legal counsel for Tamil Nadu argued that the CWMA had not issued specific directions to release the full proportionate quantity required, noting that the state is unable to provide necessary water to its farmers.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 31, requesting both parties to provide an updated status on the water release. The dispute stems from previous directions by the CWRC and CWMA regarding daily water releases from Karnataka’s reservoirs to Tamil Nadu.
