Supreme Court seeks ECI records over Form 6 modification controversy

The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the Central Government, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar following petitions alleging unilateral and illegal decisions during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

A central point of contention is the modification of Form 6, the statutory voter registration form. The court clarified that it has not approved any modified version of the form, contradicting previous claims made by the ECI. The court has summoned official records to determine who authorized these changes and whether they were made by the CEC alone or with the concurrence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, declined to suspend CEC Gyanesh Kumar but emphasized that if decisions were found to have been taken without the required unanimity or majority as mandated by law, the court would annul them.

Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have accused the CEC of abusing his position to benefit the BJP by improperly altering voter registration processes. The ECI maintains that the revision process is intended to identify fraudulent registrations and prevent illegal immigrants from voting.
