Supreme Court of India faces petitions over judicial conduct and listing procedures

The Supreme Court of India is facing separate legal challenges regarding judicial conduct and procedural integrity.

A petition seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against former Justice Yashwant Varma was mentioned before Chief Justice Surya Kant. The petition follows a Lok Sabha enquiry report that found charges against Varma, related to a cash-at-home controversy, to be proved. Varma resigned in April while the enquiry was pending. Previous attempts to seek an FIR or a CBI probe against him have been dismissed by the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.

Separately, the Lawyers Association for Constitution has written to Chief Justice Surya Kant questioning the listing of a petition filed by Noida DM Medha Roopam. The association alleges the case was “specially assigned to a particular bench” in violation of existing protocols, suggesting preferential treatment because Roopam is the daughter of the Chief Election Commissioner. The petition challenges an Allahabad High Court order regarding the detention of a student under the National Security Act.
