Supreme Court of India remarks allegedly twisted by political actors

Reports indicate a pattern of political actors stripping context from specific remarks made by Supreme Court of India judges to frame them as attacks on citizens.

In May 2026, Chief Justice Surya Kant commented on individuals holding fraudulent law degrees, comparing them to "cockroaches" and "parasites" entering professions through fake credentials. Although the Chief Justice clarified that his remarks targeted credential fraud rather than India's youth, the comment was repurposed by activists to launch a political movement.

A second instance occurred in August 2026 regarding TMC MP Mahua Moitra. After the Supreme Court declined a plea by Moitra to appear virtually in a police case, Justice Dipankar Datta remarked, "You are a Member of Parliament? Having taken the plunge into politics, you fear eggs? When our freedom fighters have taken bullets on their chest?" Critics argue this remark is being similarly decontextualized to suggest a judicial dismissal of her security concerns.
