Iran: Supreme Court overturns death sentences amid ongoing protests and labor unrest

The Iranian judicial system and civil unrest continue to draw attention through several developments. The Supreme Court of Iran has overturned the death sentences of Mehdi Nazer and Mahnaz Chardoli, both of whom were previously sentenced to death by the Tehran Revolutionary Court in connection with the January 2026 protests.

In other legal matters, Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old student, reported receiving a death sentence from a Mashhad court. Meanwhile, Ali Nezhad Abbasi Bostanabad is currently serving a prison term of 1 year and 11 months in Tabriz, following a reduction from an initial 2-year sentence for espionage charges. Additionally, political prisoner Javad Khaki has returned to Karaj Central Prison after completing a leave of absence.

On the labor front, widespread protests have been reported. Employees of the Pars Oil and Gas Company held demonstrations across at least 10 different sections and offshore platforms in the South Pars region, demanding wage reforms and better benefits. Other protests involved nurses in Kermanshah and various retirees and workers across several Iranian cities.
