Nadiem Makarim sentence reduced in Chromebook corruption appeal

The Jakarta High Court has issued an appeal ruling regarding the Chromebook procurement corruption case involving former Minister of Education, Nadiem Anwar Makarim. The court maintained Makarim's guilty verdict but reduced his prison sentence from 10 years to 9 years. His required restitution payment was also lowered from approximately Rp809 billion to Rp548.7 billion.

The court identified total state losses from the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM) at approximately Rp1.56 trillion. In a notable decision, the judges distributed the restitution responsibility among three parties: Google is ordered to pay 50% (over Rp800 billion) as a beneficiary of the licenses, Makarim is responsible for 35%, and distributors are responsible for the remaining 15%.

Makarim has expressed his intention to file a cassation to the Supreme Court, stating he does not accept the verdict and maintains that his policies did not cause state losses. His legal team remains optimistic about seeking an acquittal.
