Indonesia Chromebook procurement corruption case

Overview

Legal proceedings continue in Indonesia regarding a corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management services between 2019 and 2022.

In one ruling, the PT DKI Jakarta High Court increased the prison sentence for former technology consultant Ibrahim Arief from four to five years. The court also ordered him to pay 5 billion rupiah in replacement money, noting that his actions were “detrimental to the government’s anti-corruption programs.”

In a separate appeal ruling, the Jakarta High Court maintained the guilty verdict for former Minister of Education Nadiem Anwar Makarim but reduced his prison sentence from 10 years to 9 years. The court also lowered his required restitution from approximately Rp809 billion to Rp548.7 billion. The judges distributed restitution responsibilities for the estimated Rp1.56 trillion in state losses among three parties: Google (50%), Makarim (35%), and distributors (15%). Makarim has expressed intention to file a cassation to the Supreme Court, maintaining that his policies did not cause state losses.
