India's Cockroach Janta Party urges Supreme Court review of Jantar Mantar protests
The youth‑led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) mobilised nationwide student protests after a series of exam paper‑leak scandals, culminating in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 25 July 2026. Protesters demanded investigations, compensation for families of students who died by suicide, and the withdrawal of FIRs against demonstrators.
A petition filed by Satish Chand Kaushik asked the Supreme Court to deem Delhi’s Jantar Mantar unsuitable for large‑scale demonstrations. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan, sought the Centre’s and Delhi government’s response and later clarified that FIRs could be withdrawn except for those with grave criminal antecedents.
CJP also extended support to students in Jharkhand protesting alleged irregularities in the 14th JPSC and JSSC recruitment exams, including a hunger strike by Devendra Nath Mahto. The party announced a two‑day strategy meeting in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on 5 August and reiterated that it has no immediate plans to form a political party, focusing instead on a nationwide listening tour and further demands such as Rs 1 crore compensation for affected families.
