Supreme Court sets timeline for ECI to resolve TMC dispute
The Supreme Court of India has issued a directive to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to resolve the ongoing dispute between rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the party's name and its 'flowers and grass' election symbol within four months. The court ordered that both factions must complete their respective pleadings and submit necessary documents to the ECI within four weeks. Following this, the ECI has been granted a three-month window to reach a final decision.
Separately, the Supreme Court has agreed to an early hearing next week regarding a petition challenging the authority of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The petition, filed by Rakesh Kumar Singh, alleges that the CEC has been unilaterally exercising powers that are constitutionally vested in the multi-member Election Commission. The plea seeks the suspension of the CEC and a declaration that decisions must be made collectively by the Commission. This follows reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded at least 14 objections to decisions allegedly made without their approval.
Additionally, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded the immediate removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and claiming the CEC was acting under pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
