The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear a petition next week regarding the conduct of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The plea, filed by Rakesh Kumar Singh, seeks the suspension of the CEC and challenges the legality of decisions made by the Election Commission of India (ECI) that allegedly bypassed the collective decision-making process required by the Constitution and the 2023 Act.

The petition follows reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded at least 14 objections over a 10-month period regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The petitioners argue that the CEC has been exercising individual authority rather than acting as part of a multi-member body.

In response, the ECI stated that the objections raised by Sandhu and Joshi concerned an officer on deputation rather than matters of policy or IT division. Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Congress and the Indian Youth Congress, have staged protests across several Indian cities demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.
