Cauvery water dispute: CWMA orders Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu
The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu at Biligundlu for a 15-day period, starting August 12.
Karnataka has expressed intent to explore legal remedies, including an appeal to the Supreme Court, citing severe hydrological distress. The state reported that inflows into its four major Cauvery reservoirs—KRS, Kabini, Hemavathi, and Harangi—are 47 per cent below the 30-year average. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that water release decisions would be contingent upon the actual availability of water in the state's reservoirs to protect the interests of local farmers.
Tamil Nadu has challenged the adequacy of previous releases, claiming that recorded flows at Biligundlu were significantly lower than mandated. The state has approached the Supreme Court seeking enforcement of water allocations. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear Tamil Nadu's petition on August 13.
