Surabaya LPG explosion damages dozens of buildings and injures five
An LPG gas explosion occurred at the Nasi Tempong Sri Dewi restaurant in the San Antonio Pakuwon City area of Mulyorejo, Surabaya, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The incident resulted in five people being hospitalized and caused significant property damage, affecting 42 shops, 16 residential houses, and 8 vehicles.
Following the blast, the Surabaya Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP) issued safety warnings regarding LPG leaks. Officials noted that gas leaks often lack sound and are primarily detectable by a distinct odor. Because LPG is heavier than air, it tends to accumulate in low-lying areas or near floors, creating a high risk of explosion if ignited by electricity or open flames.
Safety guidelines provided by the DPKP include immediately turning off stoves, removing regulators, and moving gas cylinders to open, well-ventilated outdoor areas. Residents are advised to avoid using electrical switches, smoking, or creating sparks when a leak is suspected.
