Surakman identified as crew member of missing KM Arupadatu I

Authorities have identified the body found on Enggano Island, Bengkulu, as Surakman, a 60-year-old crew member of the KM Arupadatu I. The identification was confirmed through DNA testing conducted by the Polri Disaster Victim Investigation team. Surakman was among eight people—five journalists and three crew members—who went missing on September 7, 2026, while traveling to cover the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.

Following the identification, Surakman’s remains were transported via air cargo from Bengkulu to Jakarta to be returned to his family in Pandeglang, Banten. The Indonesian Press Photographers Association (PFI) has urged the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) to resume search operations for the remaining seven missing individuals, noting that this discovery provides a critical new lead regarding the possible location of the vessel and other survivors.

Separately, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that recent eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau have resulted in the emergence of approximately 32.8 hectares of new land in the waters between the volcano and Sertung Island.
