Suriname allocates land to 90 Paramaribo nurses to combat healthcare brain drain

Ninety nurses from the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP) have received land titles as part of a government initiative to provide healthcare professionals with greater stability and future prospects in Suriname.

During the ceremony, officials including Minister of Public Works Stephen Tsang and Minister of Land Policy and Forest Management Stanley L. Soeropawiro emphasized that land ownership serves as a foundation for personal development and economic security. AZP Director Claudia Redan noted that the hospital directly experiences the consequences of medical staff migrating abroad for better opportunities.

While the land allocation is viewed as a meaningful step toward addressing the healthcare brain drain, observers note it is only one part of a larger crisis. Experts suggest that while reducing housing costs helps, addressing the exodus of skilled workers also requires improvements in working conditions, workload, professional recognition, and overall salary structures.
