Suriname implements wage increases amid rising cost concerns

Hooghart also questioned the government’s decision to categorize workers into different strategic groups rather than applying a principle of equality, expressing skepticism regarding a newly proposed joint working group.

To address broader labor conditions, a technical committee consisting of government representatives and trade unions will be formed to develop additional proposals over the next three months.

In the healthcare sector, the government is introducing improved salaries for doctors and nurses to strengthen the industry. Minister Misiekaba has stated that this compensation must result in improved service quality, specifically citing shorter wait times and better availability of medicine and specialists. To fund these wages, hospital daily rates are expected to rise by approximately SRD 2,000 to SRD 2,500, potentially starting in January.

Debate continues in the National Assembly regarding financing, with concerns that the government may reduce or abolish fuel subsidies, which could drive up transportation and commodity prices.
