Suriname announces 15% salary increase for civil servants

The Surinamese government has reached an agreement to grant a 15 percent salary increase to all civil servants and equivalent employees, effective at the end of September 2026. While the government views this as a step forward, the Syndicate for Education Providers in Suriname (SOS) has expressed significant dissatisfaction. SOS noted that the 15 percent increase stands in stark contrast to their initial demand of at least 75 percent and argues that the raise may be neutralized by rising costs for fuel, food, and transportation.

In the National Assembly, Members of Parliament Krishna Mathoera and Rabin Parmessar have raised concerns regarding the scope of this decision. They questioned whether pensioners and those relying on the General Old Age Provision (AOV) would receive similar relief, as they are not covered by the civil servant salary increase. Additionally, lawmakers have requested transparency regarding the fiscal impact of the raise, specifically asking which budgetary items will fund the increase and whether the government has accounted for inflation and exchange rate fluctuations.
