Suriname announces 15% salary increase for public servants

The Surinamese government has announced a 15 percent salary increase for public servants and equivalent employees. The raise will be implemented in two stages: a 10 percent increase in September and a subsequent 5 percent increase in October.

While the government has confirmed it has the necessary financial space for this measure, the decision does not constitute a final agreement on labor conditions. President Jennifer Simons noted that the Ministry of Finance expects the increase to have no significant inflationary impact.

Labor unions have accepted the 15 percent increase but maintain that it is insufficient to cover the rising cost of living. Various unions had previously demanded higher raises, ranging from 25 percent to as high as 400 percent in certain sectors.

To continue negotiations, a joint working group consisting of eight government representatives and seven union members will be established. This group has three months to develop concrete proposals regarding employment conditions and the associated financial framework.
