Suriname develops sustainable agriculture policy with FAO support
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Suriname’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV) are developing policy recommendations to strengthen the nation’s agricultural sector. These initiatives focus on climate resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity, specifically targeting the participation of women and youth.
Between October 5 and 10, policy consultations were held in Paramaribo and Nickerie as part of the Gender-responsive Climate-smart Agriculture and Food Systems in the Caribbean (GCAF) project. This regional project is funded by the Canadian government through Global Affairs Canada.
Key policy recommendations discussed include improving access to land and financing, enhancing agricultural education, and securing reliable agricultural data. In Nickerie, specific discussions focused on protected cultivation and beekeeping, addressing challenges such as an aging workforce and the need for modern technology and technical guidance.
