Suriname agricultural modernization and policy development
Overview
Suriname is implementing several initiatives to modernize its agricultural sector through technological upgrades and policy development.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV) has introduced a pilot project using agricultural drones for fertilization and crop protection to provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional aircraft. Additionally, the ministry is working to modernize the sixty-year-old Wakaypompen pumping station in Nickerie, with plans to incorporate electric and solar power by 2027.
Complementing these technical efforts, the LVV is collaborating with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the Gender-responsive Climate-smart Agriculture and Food Systems in the Caribbean (GCAF) project. Funded by the Canadian government, this initiative involves policy consultations in Paramaribo and Nickerie to improve climate resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity for women and youth. Key focus areas include enhancing access to land, financing, and agricultural education, as well as addressing workforce aging through protected cultivation and beekeeping.
