Suriname education unions present new wage structure to government

The Joint Education Unions (GOV) have presented a new wage structure proposal to the government in Suriname, seeking to address the structural teacher shortage. Bernice Barron, coordinator for the GOV, stated that the proposal is part of a broader package of demands aimed at improving both salaries and secondary working conditions to prevent educators from leaving the profession for better-paying sectors or moving abroad.

The unions have issued an ultimatum, demanding clarity on the new wage structure by October 1, ahead of the new school year. While an initial agreement was reached with the government in June, the unions maintain that the salary scale remains a critical unresolved issue. Current salary discrepancies were highlighted, noting that some teachers earn significantly less than others depending on their grade level.

The government is currently reviewing the proposals. A plenary discussion with the government is scheduled for September 24, with follow-up talks planned for September 25 if no agreement is reached. The unions have indicated they will consider further steps if their demands for clarity are not met by the October deadline.
