Suriname expands diplomatic focus on education and visa mobility
Suriname is expanding its international diplomatic agenda to focus on education, capacity building, and improved global mobility. Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and Cooperation Melvin Bouva announced a new agreement with Morocco providing ten fully funded scholarships for Surinamese students. This follows previous arrangements for partially funded scholarships that were underutilized.
Suriname is also engaging in discussions with Ghana, the Netherlands, and Belgium regarding educational opportunities. The strategy aims not only to send Surinamese students abroad to gain skills but also to attract foreign experts to the country in fields such as anthropology, sociology, and maritime studies.
In addition to education, the government is prioritizing the easing of visa procedures to increase international mobility. During the 81st UN General Assembly, discussions were held regarding visa-free access and simplified procedures. Agreements have been reached with Panama regarding aviation and visa regimes, and a modified visa arrangement with Saudi Arabia is nearing formal completion. A key priority remains improving the visa process for Surinamese citizens traveling to the Netherlands, with a focus on making procedures more user-friendly and securing longer-term visas.
