Suriname expands diplomatic ties with Mexico and Morocco
Suriname's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, Melvin Bouva, held bilateral meetings with representatives from Mexico and Morocco on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In discussions with Mexican Undersecretary Raquel Serur Smeke, Suriname explored cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure, and technical training. While the talks highlighted opportunities for knowledge exchange relevant to Suriname's developing oil and gas sector, no concrete investment or technology transfer agreements were finalized during the meeting. Mexico has been invited to participate in the Suriname Energy, Oil & Gas Summit in 2027.
In a separate meeting with Moroccan Minister Nasser Bourita, the focus shifted to agriculture, education, and renewable energy. Discussions included the implementation of 30 Moroccan scholarships for Surinamese students and continued support for the agricultural sector, including the provision of fertilizers. Both nations also expressed interest in utilizing sports diplomacy to strengthen bilateral ties.
