Suriname diplomatic engagement and bilateral relations
Overview
Suriname has engaged in several diplomatic efforts to strengthen international relations through bilateral meetings and developmental projects.
In September 2026, India and Suriname marked the golden jubilee of their relations with the handover of a pedestrian safety project in Paramaribo under the Quick Impact Projects initiative. This followed previous Indian developmental support, such as the funding of a fruit processing facility aimed at supporting Suriname as a partner in the ‘Global South’.
Concurrently, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Surinamese Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva met with representatives from Mexico and Morocco. Discussions with Mexico focused on potential cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure, and technical training, particularly regarding Suriname’s developing oil and gas sector. Meetings with Morocco centered on agriculture, education, and renewable energy, including the implementation of 30 Moroccan scholarships for Surinamese students and the provision of fertilizers.
