Suriname honors twenty Maroon community leaders at inaugural fair
Twenty members of the Maroon community were honored for their contributions to Suriname during the closing of the inaugural Maroon Legacy Wi Rutu fair at Roeli’s Event Venue in Magenta. The honorees include entrepreneurs, musicians, and individuals active in social, educational, and community development sectors.
Organized by the Ministry of Regional Development, the two-day event was part of Maroon Legacy Month, which runs from September 18 to October 10. The initiative aims to highlight the history, culture, and traditions of Maroon communities while focusing on entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
Committee Chair Minanga Hertsberg noted that the pilot event provided valuable lessons for future iterations. The Ministry intends to make the fair an annual event to provide a permanent platform for culture and economic recognition. The Maroon Legacy Month celebrations will conclude on October 10 during the Day of the Maroons.
