Suriname Maroon Legacy Month and regional development
Overview
Minister of Regional Development Miquella Huur launched Maroon Legacy Month in Suriname to celebrate Maroon culture and address development in the interior. The initiative included activities such as lectures, panel discussions, and the Saamaka Daka on September 19. Minister Huur emphasized that regional progress requires structural dialogue between the state and local populations, noting that development cannot be the “sole responsibility of the government.”
As part of the month-long celebrations, the Ministry organized the inaugural Maroon Legacy Wi Rutu fair, honoring twenty community members for their contributions. The celebrations concluded on October 10 during the Day of the Maroons.
On October 10, Suriname and its diaspora celebrated Marron Day, marking the anniversary of the 1760 peace treaty between Maroons and the Dutch colonial government. In Suriname, President Jennifer Simons called for national unity and solidarity during ceremonies at the Plein van 10 oktober 1760. She highlighted the importance of teaching children about ancestral history prior to slavery and noted that the government is working with traditional authorities to establish administrative structures and demarcations, a process expected to conclude largely by 2027.
Cultural observances included a Marron Film Week, which concluded with the screening of ‘Fort Buku’. In the Netherlands, the Surinamese community in Tilburg also held commemorations at the De Back community center, featuring lectures and cultural performances to honor the heritage of descendants.
