Suriname implements strict oversight for USD 185 million in social project funds

The government is implementing strict controls over USD 185 million allocated for social projects, sourced from an expansion of the existing 2035 government bond. This expansion, totaling USD 265 million, was finalized in February.

Minister of Finance and Planning Adelien Wijnerman stated that because the funds originate from investors, clear agreements are in place to ensure the money is used exclusively for predetermined projects. To oversee this, a special board has been established, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Planning, a private sector monitoring team, and officials from the ministries responsible for project execution.

Every project must be reviewed and approved by this board before implementation can begin, ensuring adherence to strict procurement procedures. Additionally, an independent external accountant will conduct an audit at the end of each year to verify that funds were spent according to established protocols. Currently, approximately 30 percent of the available funds have been allocated, with about USD 3.1 million already paid out for ongoing projects.
