Suriname inaugurates new pumping station at Sommelsdijks Kreek

A new pumping station at Sommelsdijks Kreek has officially been commissioned to improve water management and drainage in Paramaribo, Suriname. The facility is designed to increase the city's resilience against flooding by managing excess water through the creek and connected waterways. This infrastructure serves critical areas, including the historic city center, modern residential zones, and tourist districts.

The project was funded by a US$ 2.7 million grant from the Government of Japan as part of an economic and social development program. The installation utilizes modern Japanese technology and high-quality industrial pumps to replace and improve essential pump and sluice infrastructure. While the station is now operational, additional finishing work on the associated building is still underway. The initiative is viewed as a symbol of the long-standing friendship between Suriname and Japan.
