Paramaribo water management and infrastructure

Overview

In August 2026, a technical failure at the Van Hattemweg water production station caused significant water pressure drops and temporary service interruptions for residents in Groot-Paramaribo and Paramaribo-Noord. The outage affected several pump wells responsible for delivering approximately 1,000 cubic metres of drinking water per hour.

By September 2026, new infrastructure was commissioned at Sommelsdijks Kreek to improve water management and drainage in Paramaribo. Funded by a US$ 2.7 million grant from the Government of Japan, this new pumping station utilizes Japanese technology to increase the city’s resilience against flooding by managing excess water through the creek and connected waterways.
