Suriname Ministry of Agriculture announces modernization plans
Suriname’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV) has announced several initiatives aimed at modernizing the agricultural sector and reducing production costs. Minister Mike Noersaliem is introducing a pilot project involving the purchase of five agricultural drones intended for fertilization and crop protection. These drones are expected to provide a more precise and cost-effective alternative to traditional crop-dusting aircraft, particularly for smaller farmers.
In addition to technological upgrades, the ministry is focusing on critical irrigation infrastructure in Nickerie. Plans are underway to modernize the Wakaypompen, a pumping station that has been in operation for over sixty years. A study is currently being conducted with the goal of completing the modernization by 2027. To improve efficiency and sustainability, one pump has already been converted to electric power, and there are further plans to incorporate solar energy into the system.
While these investments aim to improve reliability and lower costs, questions remain regarding the long-term scalability of the drone project and the practical implementation of the infrastructure upgrades.
