Suriname plans to convert SLM monthly subsidies into loans
Suriname's Minister of Finance and Planning, Adelien Wijnerman, has announced plans to convert the monthly financial support provided to the national airline, Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (SLM), into a formal loan agreement. The airline currently receives approximately USD 2 million per month from the state to manage its urgent financial situation.
Wijnerman stated that these payments are being made outside of regular budgetary frameworks due to the airline's emergency status. The ministry intends to establish clear contractual terms to ensure the funds can eventually be recovered. This move comes amid concerns regarding the airline's lack of transparency, as SLM has failed to submit required annual financial reports.
Political criticism has emerged regarding the effectiveness of these injections. VHP Member of Parliament Mahinder Jogi noted that the state has provided between USD 25 million and USD 30 million to the company over the last year without achieving operational stability. An emergency meeting between the state and SLM is scheduled to discuss the future structure of this financing.
