Suriname politicians debate 15 percent civil servant wage increase

Surinamese politicians are debating a 15 percent wage increase for all civil servants announced by President Jennifer Simons, set to take effect at the end of September.

NDP member Herman Dulder has criticized the move, labeling it a unilateral decision by the government that bypassed negotiations with labor unions. Dulder expressed concern that the increase lacks tripartite consultation and questioned why the government is rushing the implementation, suggesting it may be an attempt to preempt public unrest regarding the potential removal of price caps.

Meanwhile, former DOE MP Carl Breeveld has voiced support for a proposal by VHP faction leader Asis Gajadien to temporarily suspend the salary increase for the Director of General Administration. This is intended to prevent the automatic legal coupling of the increase from flowing to the President, ministers, members of the National Assembly, and the judiciary. Proponents argue that allowing the increase to cascade to high-ranking political officials while average civil servants struggle would create unfair economic disparities.
