Suriname postpones wage increase for cabinet and National Assembly

The Surinamese government has decided to temporarily postpone a planned 15 percent wage increase for cabinet members and the National Assembly (DNA). While the increase was originally scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026, as part of new remuneration scales, officials have opted to delay implementation pending further research and evaluation.

The government intends to review the economic situation, public opinion, and the implications of the new remuneration structure. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 2026 to evaluate the situation and reach a definitive decision, the results of which will be shared transparently with the public.

In contrast to the delay for political officials, the 15 percent wage increase for civil servants and related employees remains in effect. Minister of Home Affairs Marinus Bee confirmed that civil servants will receive the full percentage by the end of September, refuting previous reports that the payment would be split into two installments.
