Suriname's SLM faces scrutiny over subsidies and management

The future of the Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (SLM) is under intense scrutiny as questions arise regarding the effectiveness of government financial support. VHP parliamentarian Mahinder Jogi has raised concerns over the sustainability of injecting an estimated USD 25 million to USD 30 million into the national carrier over the past year without seeing structural improvements in service.

Operational issues, including frequent flight delays, continue to impact passengers and damage the airline's reputation. Jogi is calling for a rigorous cost-benefit analysis to determine if these funds would be better utilized elsewhere in society if the current trajectory does not lead to visible progress.

Critics and citizens are also calling for significant management reforms. There are demands for a clear separation between political oversight and daily operations, arguing that the SLM requires specialized commercial leadership rather than political appointments. To become a viable commercial entity, stakeholders suggest the airline needs a professional management team with proven expertise in aviation, finance, and strategic operations to navigate international competition and high operational costs.
